We are hoping that you have all enjoyed a relaxing family-filled Family Day weekend. Sunday marked the beginning of Kindness Week in Ottawa. As a grade three community we will reflect on ways we can be like St. Mother Teresa says "The Living Expression of God's Kindness." Students will also hear the Gospel from this past Sunday, the first Sunday of Lent. Last week, we had a deep learning conversation about things we can all fast from and feast on during our Lenten journey. Students created beautiful "Fast From, Feast On" posters to document what they will be sacrificing as they journey with Jesus to the cross. Literacy: *Read Alouds- Kindness Week, Lent, Character *Go Map- Retelling *Responding to questions about texts *Free Writing Math: *Relationships between 2D and 3D shapes *Classifying 2D Shapes *Telling Time *Finding the Sum and Difference *Bar Graphs about 2D and 3D shapes Science: *More maker challenges- Building strong and stable structures *Read, Record, Wonder- Structures and Forces Physical Education and Health:
*Badminton Skills *Healthy Choices Religion: As of this Wednesday- Ash Wednesday, we will begin our Lenten journey. Our Ash Wednesday Liturgy will take place on Wednesday, February 14th at 9:30 a.m. in our gymnasium. All are welcome to attend. As we approach Ash Wednesday, students will hear and reflect upon the Gospel from this past Sunday where Jesus cures a leper. Students will also explore what the season of Lent is all about through readings and activities from our Growing In Faith, Growing In Christ program. We will also continue to hear about more Fruits of the Spirit and think about ways we can live them out in our daily lives. Here is the short video on the the Fruit of the Spirit- Self-Control that students viewed and reflected on last week. Literacy: *Listening to and Reading Narratives *Responding to questions about texts using proof from the text and our own ideas *Retelling Narrative Texts using the Go Map *Author's Purpose *Author's Message *Valentine Poems *Valentine Research Go Map Math: *Attributes of 2D shapes (number of vertices, number of sides, equal length sides, number and type of angles, lines of symmetry) *Parallelograms *Exploring relationships between 2D and 3D shapes *Solving problems involving 2D and 3D shapes Science: Last week students enthusiastically created blueprint designs to create a bridge for a character named Nanabush from a First Nations folk tale that they heard last week. They were only given straws and masking tape to build their bridges and their bridges had to hold the weight of Nanabush and all of the fish he caught (7 stacked bean bags). Their designs and bridges were impressive! Students already know that the structures they build must be strong and stable! This week: *Read, Record and Wonder- Structures and Forces - how structures and forces are involved in the Olympics *Maker challenges- building strong and stable structures- Nanabush Physical Education: Students built their strength, endurance and balance by moving through the many different obstacle courses provided by our friends from Jungle Sport! They sure showed a lot of character as they climbed, hopped over hoops, swung and soared! An exciting time was had by all! This week we will continue to work on our badminton skills. Welcome to the month of February! We continue on our journey of learning and are working hard towards many learning goals each and every day! We celebrated Groundhog Day on Friday with a special read aloud called "Groundhog Gets A Say." Students loved this info-fiction book that entertained them with some of the sarcasm from the characters and built their knowledge with many facts about groundhogs. It was a great way to end our week and start the month of February! Here is what we will be up to this week. Religion- Last week students reflected and thought deeply about these questions: "Who is the Holy Spirit?" What does the Holy Spirit do for us?" They had many insightful ideas. After sharing some readings from our Growing in Faith book, students learned that the Holy Spirit blesses us with many gifts that can help us to love God and others more and live the lives God wants us to live by following Jesus' footsteps. Students heard about the Gifts of the Spirit and know that using these gifts on a daily basis will lead to many "fruits" in their lives. This week they will explore the "Fruits of the Spirit."
