It's hard to believe we are approaching the end of September! Time flies when you're on an exciting journey of learning like we are! Our journey continues! We are excited to welcome a student teacher from the University of Ottawa Faculty of Education. She came for her first day last Wednesday to meet our classes. She will be with us on Wednesdays until November and then will re-join us for a few full weeks in December. We are thrilled to have Ms. Pharand be a part of our learning community! Here is a quick glimpse of what we will be up to during our final week of September. Literacy: *Recount Read Alouds- highlighting features of recount texts *Writing recounts *Continuing our deep learning about Terry Fox using Hapara Workspace *Author's Message/Author's Purpose *Fiction vs Non-Fiction texts *Media Literacy- Samaritans on a Digital Road Math: *Mental Math- Making 10, Doubles, Near Doubles *Showing numbers in different ways *Building numbers in different ways with base ten blocks *Placing Numbers on number lines *Vertical Learning Walls- Place Value problem solving
Science: Last week students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to be scientists in our St. Cecilia school garden. Some students documented our visit using our ipads, recording interesting things that they noticed while we harvested a variety of vegetables. We took a close look at the different parts of the plant and we learned that some vegetables are considered root vegetables because they grow under the soil, like roots do. On Friday we tasted some the of the sweet tasting carrots that we harvested. They were delicious! This week students will read a variety of texts about plants and soil to build their knowledge. They will "Read, Record and Wonder!" As students read they will record new knowledge and wonderings that they have. Physical Education:
*Locomotor Skills *Ball Skills- Sending and Receiving
It certainly was a very busy day and we are sure your child is just as tired as we are! It was wonderful meeting many of you this morning. Today was filled with many firsts! Your child should have gone home with their mailbag and agenda. They should have had a newsletter from their French teacher, a newsletter from their English teacher, a tech agreement (to sign and return), a consent form (to sign and return), a brochure for student insurance and, if they are the oldest and/or only a school board calendar. We began today by building our religion table as a classroom community. We also completed a Y-chart for snack/lunch and one for Turn and Talk. We must say that we were impressed by the students ability to share their ideas in a large group situation. In the afternoon, we were able to go outside with all the grade three students to do some singing with Mrs. McCuen leading us with her guitar. We know that this year will be full of lots of learning and many more firsts.
