It is hard to believe that it is already the end of January! Students have been busy working on learning goals across all subject areas and continue to be encouraged to show initiative, organization and critical thinking skills on a daily basis. Here is how our upcoming week looks across curriculum subject areas. Religion: This week students will hear the Gospel reading from Sunday where Jesus begins his ministry work preaching and healing the sick. He also reminds us in this Gospel just how important it is to ask for forgiveness for our sins. In preparation for our upcoming Gospel Values assembly for the Gospel Value of Love, students will reflect on all of the ways that they can show love to others on a daily basis. Math: Last week students were engaged in several time questions that required them to use their critical thinking skills in order to solve the given questions. Students realized that they were thinking critically because they had to make connections to concepts and strategies covered in other strands of Math while solving problems linked to time (e.g. using addition and subtraction, using t-charts, thinking about pattern rules, using number lines). This week our focus continues to be on Time relationships. Students will work both collaboratively and independently to solve a variety of Math problems that require them to think deeply about the time relationships we've come across as a learning community thus far (seconds to minutes, minutes to hours, hours to days, days to weeks, weeks to months and months to years). You can see some of our Mathematicians in action, solving a rich question about time on our Twitter feed. Literacy: Last week students heard and read stories for the purpose of thinking about the author's purpose and author's message. Students responded to these texts by writing about what they felt the author's purpose and author's message was. To bump up their responses, students have been given feedback about giving specific proof and examples from the text to support their answers. Many students continue to work on this learning goal and as such this will be a focus once again this week. Another focus this week will be on asking thoughtful questions before, during and after reading text. Students will be introduce to the Q Matrix to help them formulate and record the questions that they have.
Welcome to 2017! We hope that you enjoyed a blessed Christmas and happy new year with family and friends! Hopefully all students are coming back relaxed and renewed and ready to meet the learning goals that they will set for themselves for 2017. We are excited to get back on our journey of learning in grade three! Here is a very brief glimpse of what we will get up to this week. Religion: This week students will explore the feast of the Epiphany and the messages that the Magi give to us. They will also write a prayer for the new year. Math: Students will be engaged in Math tasks that require them to think critically about termperature and patterns.
Literacy: Our focus for this week will be on looking at Procedural texts and creating a success critieria for completing procedural writing pieces. Students will also have the opportunity to write a recount about their Christmas holidays, incorporating all of the "writer's workshop" lessons we have explored since September (catchy leads and topic sentences, run on sentences, varying sentence beginnings, using homonyms correctly, choosing interesting vocabulary to use). Science; This week we will gather in both small and large group knowledge building cirlces to consolidate the information and knowledge students have gathered about plants and soil through their Science Hyperdocs stations. Physical Education: Before the holidays students began putting their volleyball skills to use in lead up to volleyball games in groups of four. This will be a continued focus for this week as well. A New Year's Prayer Lord, You make all things new You bring hope alive in our hearts And cause our Spirits to be born again. Thank you for this new year For all the potential it holds. Come and kindle in us A mighty flame So that in our time, many will see the wonders of God And live forever to praise Your glorious name. Amen (A modern prayer for the New Year from www.lords-prayer-words.com) |
