Literacy We have continued to work on examining the question-answer relationship. The students are continuing to think more deeply about the text they are listening to and the text they are reading. Asking questions before, during and after reading helps to better understand what we are reading, as well as stay focused on the main idea and or purpose of the text. As a classroom community we discussed how 'thin or surface' questions don't really help us to better udnerstand the text. It's those 'thick or deep' questions that help us to better understand what we read. As we read No Shoes Petra, students made excellent use of the Q Matrix to help them formulate the many questions they had before, during and after reading this text. We then sorted the questions they had into four categories depending on where the answers to their questions were found- Right There, Think and Search, Author and Me or On my own. Through the sorting process, we discovered that many of the questions we asked fell within the first three categories. This week we will continue to hear stories with similar themes presented in No Shoes Petra and students will record their questions before, during and after reading. Science
The students will continue to build their knowledge of structures this week. We hope to gather student wonderings and group them into some of the big ideas presented in our grade three Science curriculum.
Welcome to the second week of February! We have an exciting spirit week ahead of us, as well as Asian New Year which we will celebrate tomorrow in our classroom. The beginning of our Lenten journey which will begin this Wednesday, February 10th- Ash Wednesday, is also fast approaching! We will gather as a whole school community for an Ash Wednesday liturgy on Wednesday at 9:45 in our gymnasium. All are welcome to attend. This week is certain to be a busy, exciting and fun filled week of learning. Here is a quick glimpse at our week. Religion: Students will continue to hear stories of children from around the world from the book "All God's Children", as well as offer prayers for them this week.. They love hearing the stories of these children and always mention Abdel of Chad, Yuan of China and Paj from Thailand during our morning intentions. This is a wonderful activity that links so well with the celebration of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, as well as linking to our school board spiritual theme- "Restore One Another in a Spirit of Gentleness." Students will also listen to and reflect on the Gospel from this past Sunday where Jesus continues His work in the world and encourages Peter and his other disciples to follow Him and become fishers of people. Students will continue to be on the look out for any visits they might have received from Jesus and will record these visits on hearts to surround our prayer table. Last week we discussed visits from Jesus as being times when someone has done something to us that Jesus might have done. It was so inspiring to hear the many times students have experienced "visits from Jesus" through the words and actions of their peers and family members.. Students learned how important it is to recognize these special visits and to be a person who is responsible for bringing another person a "visit from Jesus". Literacy: Last week in Literacy, we discussed how important it is for readers to ask questions before, during and after reading a text. We introduced students to the "Q Matrix" to enable them to ask deep and meaningful questions about the texts they read. During some read alouds last week, students put the Q Matrix to excellent use and were able to ask thoughtful questions about the texts that they heard. By asking questions throughout these read alouds, students realized that often our questions get answered in the book, however sometimes we need to use our schema because the answers to our questions are not always "right there" in the text. This week we will discuss the Question Answer Relationship with students and will begin to look at a variety of questions about a text and identify if the answers to these questions are in the text ("right there") or whether the answer will come from their schema, or whether the answer will come from ideas from the text and their schema. Below is a Q Matrix and a resource that explains the Question Answer Relationship. In writing this week we will look at the partner procedural texts students worked on last week. Students will be able to provide feedback to one another about the procedural texts they wrote and will take that feedback to help them as they write a procedural text independently. This week we will continue work with our word wall words from last week during our literacy stations.
