Welcome to Catholic Education Week 2017! This week students will be engaged in activities about all of the different provinces of Canada in celebration of Canada 150 and will be involved in activities linked to our Catholic Education Week theme "Walking Forward Together." We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, May 4th, from 8:00 AM- 9:10 AM at our open house where students will show you around the school and introduce you to some of the exciting learning they do on a daily basis. Religion: This week students will hear the Gospel from Sunday where Jesus appears to two men who are on the road to Emmaus. They will also reflect on why we celebrate Catholic Education Week.
Math: This week students will explore transformational geometry: translations (slides), rotations (turns) and reflections (flips). Students will also use t-charts to transform geometric patterns into number patterns. Lastly, students will add and subtract money values up to $10.
Happy Easter to each and every one of you! We hope that you all enjoyed a faith filled Easter with family and friends! We have another short week ahead of us. It is action packed across all areas of the curriculum. Here is what we will be up to. Religion: This week students will reflect on the Easter Gospel from Sunday and will complete the Holy Week Narratives through the eyes of Jesus that they were working on throughout Holy Week. Students will write their own prayer for the Easter season which lasts a whole fifty days! Fifty days to celebrate our risen Lord. Since it is also Earth Week, students will explore some teachings about caring for God's Creations, most especially Pope Francis' message to us about caring for the Earth that God our Creator made for us. Literacy: This week students will have an opportunity to write a narrative with a partner using the success criteria that we have created as a class. Through read alouds and hearing story beginnings students have learned how important it is for their writing to be "SHOW" instead of tell, as well as to include dialogue and interesting vocabulary to capture and maintain the reader's attention. Students also recognize that using a variety of passage of time words enables the reader to stay entertained throughout the piece of writing they are reading.
Math: This week students will combine their knowledge of area, perimeter and money concepts to solve a variety of inquiries. Students will again put our vertical learning spaces to good use during these collaborative Math inquiries and will put many of the 6 C's into action as well. Science: Last week students got together with their grade five partners to create a plan/design for an animal shelter for a brother animal, inspired by an Aboriginal story entitled "Nanabush Builds A Shelter For An Animal Brother." Students had to collaborate, communicate, show character and think critically as they researched and designed shelters for a variety of animals. Next students will begin to build their shelters that must be able to support a load and withstand the force of wind. Ministry Visitors On Thursday, April 20th, our classes will be filmed by education officers from the Ministry of Education. They will be documenting student learning and thinking while they are visiting our classroom. Please be sure to sign and return consent forms in order for your child to be videoed or interviewed. No last names will be used in any publications. |
