As discussed during "Meet the Teacher" here is a visual of the Zones of Regulation. Students are encouraged to identify what zone they are in and to use the tools necessary to move into the 'Green Zone' to optimize their learning. We continue to encourage you to use these tools at home as well.
It's hard to believe that we will be headed into the month of October in just a few days. Time flies when you're growing and learning in grade three everyday! It was wonderful to meet many of you in person at our Meet the Teacher night! Thank you for taking time to come and see where your child spends his/her day at St. Cecilia. Below is a glance at how our week looks across the different subject areas. Religion: Last week in Religion we focused many of our discussions on what a community is. Students wrote about the communities that they belong to and the gifts and talents that they bring to these communities. This week, students will hear the Gospel from this past Sunday where Jesus tells a parable about a rich man and a poor man named Lazarus. Students learn that when they are kind and giving to others they grow closer to God. We will also spend time exploring what it means to belong to a Catholic Community. Math: Last week in Math we looked at the graphs that students created with their learning partners and then we co-created success criteria for what both bar graphs and pictographs need to include. (See Resource Section). Students then had the opportunity to create bar graphs and pictograph on their own using the success criteria that we created together. This week, students will continue to practise creating graphs based on the data from various tally charts and will begin to use adding strategies to answer questions such as "How many people were surveyed in all?" about the graphs they have made. They will also have time to write more conclusions about the data that they have displayed on graphs. Literacy: Last week students had the opportunity to retell a short story read to them in class using the Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Finally strategy. In Media Literacy, they learned about what it means to be a positive digital citizen and wrote a short reflection on things that they can do to stay safe when using technology. On Friday, we discussed all of the different text types that authors write ( recounts, narratives, descriptive texts, procedural texts, information reports, persuasive texts). This week students will hear and read a variety of recount texts and will be on the look out for past tense verbs and time order words. After reading several recounts, we will then co-create a success criteria chart for writing a recount. Later in the week, students will be engaged in a writer's workshop mini lesson about writing catchy leads (opening sentences) for their recounts in order to hook the reader and make them want to read more! Science: What an exciting Science block we had on Thursday! We took students out into the St. Cecilia garden to explore the plants that are growing there, as well as the soil that they are growing in. Students brought ipads out with them to capture their observations and afterwards they displayed their findings using technology tools like Pic Collage and Explain Everything. This activity was a collaborative one! Students had to collaborate with their peers about what they would take photographs of, as well as to make decisions about the technology tool the group would use to share out the observations they made. Mrs. Brownrigg and I heard things like "Let's take a vote" and "I can type quickly, I can do the typing," as well as "You can post your picture first." All signs that students are learning what it means to be an effective collaborator! On Friday the other grade three classes were involved in a workshop from an organization called "Growing Up Organic," where they harvested some items from our garden and collected seeds. They shared some of the items they harvested with us and we were able to take a close look at the seeds inside the vegetables they collected. Our classes will also have the opportunity to be a part of a workshop with Growing Up Organic in early October. Our workshop will also take place in our garden and will focus on the benefits that composting has on gardens. Lots of hands on exploring happening during Science. This week, students will have an opportunity to share out their garden observations and wonderings to their classmates. Physical Education/Health: Students will continue to engage in locomotor movement games, as well as heart healthy fitness stations. Later in the week students will work collaboratively in small groups to explore personal safety topics such as bike safety, pedestrian safety, swimming safety, playground safety and bus safety. We have a busy week of leaning and discovering ahead of us! Thank you for all that you do to support your child on their grade three journey of learning!
Our Prayer Table We have spent time building our prayer table with the students and can't wait to see what other things they wish to add. We welcome students to bring in any faith books or symbols that are meaningful to them to place on our prayer table. Our prayer table will change often throughout the year and we want students to play an active role in the changes that we make as we journey through the different liturgical seasons of our school year together. Our Prayer Table We've been in all week preparing our classroom. We want every child who enters our classroom to be full of wonder, to feel at home and to grow in their love of God. We believe in promoting a growth mindset within our classroom. Students will hear about persistence, tenacity, and perseverance. They will be given feedback to help them grow as a learner. We will focus on the 6 C's: Character, Citizenship, Communication, Critical thinking and Problem Solving, Collaboration and Creativity and Imagination.
We will continue to update our blog over the week and share some pictures of our flexible learning space. |
