Literacy The students this week will continue to work on descriptive writing in partners. They are learning how important it is to ensure they have a great lead and a closing. Will will also continue to focus on compound words. Through the Christmas Story your child will sequence pictures and use descriptive detail to retell the story in their own words. Mathematics We are continuing to examine temperature. The students will learn to read positive temperatures from a thermometer and tell if a temperature is cold, cool, warm or hot. The students will also learn benchmark temperatures such as: water boiling (100 degrees Celcius), room temperature (about 21 degrees Celcius), and when water freezes (0 degrees Celcius). The students are also continuing to focus on fact families and strategies for adding and subtracting numbers. Please continue to visit Mathletics and DreamBox over the holiday season.
Gospel Assembly-Hope The Grade three students are in charge of introducing the virtue of Hope this week. The students will present two short songs during our assembly this week. We have also produced a short iMovie on what hope means to them. The assembly is at 2:30 on Tuesday should you be able to drop in. It is a very short assembly. We are now beginning the second week of Advent. Tomorrow we will light the second purple candle on our Advent wreath which represents peace and preparation. Together we will celebrate a short Advent liturgy in our classroom and will talk about the Gospel from this past Sunday where Isaiah tells the people to "Prepare the Way of the Lord." All throughout last week, we gathered around our prayer table and sang Advent songs and prayed Advent prayers. A few students have been inspired to write their own prayers and these are some of the prayers we have been hearing during this special time around our prayer table. Literacy: Last week in literacy, we wrote a shared descriptive text about Jesus using the descriptive writing success criteria that we created as a class. Students did a wonderful job of using interesting descriptive vocabulary and showed creativity when thinking about a catchy opening and a closing that contained a lot of feeling. We will post this marvelous piece of writing created by your children under the resources section of the blog. I'm sure you will be impressed as well! This week, students will work with a partner to write a descriptive text using our success criteria. As a class, we will brainstorm topics for this partner writing. Our word work for the next couple of weeks will focus on compound words. We continue to encourage students to complete word work activities at home as part of their nightly homework routine. Math: We have wrapped up our inquiries about number patterns for the moment. Students have solved a variety of questions involving number patterns with partners and independently. They have definitely grown in their ability to show their Math thinking in a way that is clear and visible to the reader. Having the opportunity to get feedback from their teachers and their peers and then using that feedback to go and bump up their work is what has enabled them to make progress with showing their Math thinking in a clear and organized manner. This week we will continue playing some fact family games and will begin to buzz about what students know about temperature. Hamper Items: Thank you to all of you who have already sent in your child's contribution to our class hamper. It's not too late to send items in. Mrs. .McCuen's class have a family that includes a mother and a nine year old girl. Mrs. Brownrigg's class have a family with a mother and an eight year old boy. If you and your child would like to contribute age appropriate books, toys or games to our hamper, that would be wonderful. Please remember that items must be brand new. We appreciate your generosity and support with this restorative and joyous project. Hour of Code This week students will have the opportunity to participate in one hour of coding with students and teachers all over the world. It is certain to be a learning experience they will not soon forget. We will post some student reaction to the hour of code once the event has taken place, |
